The Redskins made many moves this offseason to improve their defense and it started with the hiring of head coach Ron Rivera. Ron Rivera is a defensive minded head coach that led the panthers to numerous playoff appearences and a Super Bowl appearance. He also won Coach of the year twice. The panthers teams under Riverboat Ron were known for Cam Newton and an elite defense led by Luke Keuchly. Ron Rivera’s discipline and militant style of coaching is just what Washington needs to change the culture.
With the number 2 pick of the draft, the Redskins selected Chase Young a.k.a the predator. Chase Young had 16.5 sacks last year at Ohio state and is widely compared to Julius Peppers. He was the number 1 prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft and has the ability to take over a game with his elite pass rushing skills. The words “generational talent” have been used to describe Chase Young by many NFL analysts and scouts. Four former 1st round picks are on this defensive line before Chase Young even takes a snap in his 1st game which could be scary for the NFL. The redskins 3rd down defense was one of the worst in the NFL last year because of a lack of pass rush when it mattered but Chase Young has the ability to change that.
Jack Del Rio being hired as the defensive coordinator was the 2nd best offseason move the team made. The Redskins have struggled with defensive coordinators in the past and haven’t been able to get the best out of their young talent. Del Rio’s track record speaks for itself. He was a super bowl champion as a linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. As the defensive coordinator for the panthers he turned their defense around to the second ranked defense in yards allowed. He also coached elite pass rushers Julius Peppers, an elite pass rusher, who is what Washington hopes Chase Young can become. When Jack Del Rio coached the Broncos in 2012 he led them to be 2nd ranked in yards allowed and 4th in points allowed. He coached another elite pass rusher named Von Miller. His next stop was as a head coach in Oakland where in the 2016 season he led the team to a 12 – 4 record and coached another elite pass rusher in Khalil Mack. It seems like everywhere Jack goes he finds a great defensive end and gets the best out of them. Since history repeats itself it looks like we will see the same formula with Chase Young and Jack Del Rio.
Kendall Fuller was traded back in 2018 for Alex Smith but was brought back in free agency this offseason. He is mainly a slot corner that can play safety and outside cornerback at a high level. Before he was traded back in 2018 Kendall Fuller was rated as a shutdown corner in the slot position for the Redskins by Pro Football Focus. His leadership and versatility will be vital in the improvement of the Redskins secondary. Cutting Josh Norman had to be done as he was a liability on defense all year in 2019.
