Almost every NFL team has now had to deal with players deciding to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to the ongoing pandemic and COVID-19 concerns, and the Chicago Bears are no different. The Bears have officially lost two players to opts out. Those players being NT Eddie Goldman and S Jordan Lucas. And now with the deadline for player opt outs passing by, it looks like those should be the only players that the Bears will not have this season due to opt outs.
In terms of the impact of their losses, it is much different for both players. NT Eddie Goldman is an immense loss to this Bears defense as he is a very impactful player and a key cog in this defense. Not to mention, they also don’t have much depth behind him. So guys like John Jenkins, Roy Robertson Harris, etc. will have to step up or the Bears front office will have to bring in guys from free agency such as Snack Harrison. Either way, the Bears will be hard pressed to try to replace Goldman adequately, so his loss definitely hurts this defense.
In terms of S Jordan Lucas, this loss is much less impactful. Lucas was going to be competing for a spot as the 4th safety on the roster behind Eddie Jackson, Taushaun Gipson and Deon Bush. So now, it looks like either Sherrick McManus or DeAndre Houston-Carson will make the roster. Either way, Lucas was not going to be more than a depth piece for this Bears team and he had only signed a one year deal worth one million dollars. So it looks one loss was super impactful for the Bears, and the other not so much. For my full thoughts on both players, check the videos above.
