Phillip Rivers has been average after three weeks and that’s being nice. Yes, the Colts are 2-1 but the performance so far from Rivers has been terrible. Looking at the stats you can see that he has only thrown 3 touchdowns and has matched that with three interceptions. Peaking at 363 passing yards in week one. He has not been able to utilize his receivers at all this season. TY Hilton has literally been a non-factor. Personally, I have never been wowed by Phillip Rivers and his past performances but this has been terrible so far. It really has been the defense in my opinion that has kept Rivers in the games this far.
This week he is up against the Bears defense, who ranks 7th against opposing QB’s. I can’t imagine his lighting up this defense and winning might be a challenge. The chip on his shoulder or not, I have not seen the fire in his eyes this year. You could make an argument that his weapons are not up to par. Jack Doyle has been banged up and TY Hilton is not a young dynamic receiver anymore. You can make an argument but I argue against that. They drafted a young and talented Michael Pittman and a Workhorse RB in Jonathan Taylor. Rivers also has the veteran experience and sits behind one of the best o-lines in the NFL. Yes it will take time for them all to gel, and Pittman has been banged up, but there really is no excuse for this lackluster performance so far.
Being a Colts fan. I don’t believe Rivers is the long-term solution and maybe Jacob Eason could be the guy in the future. The problem right now is that Rivers is good enough to keep his job, but not good enough to take the Colts to the promised land. Yes, Eason has more upside and probably more hunger, but I don’t think we will see that this year unless Rivers get hurt.
The bottom line here is that I am not sold on Rivers getting it done fully in the NFL. There are far superior QB’s in the NFL and Rivers does not come close to that talent. He is a temporary bandaid and keeping him in is not a long a term solution. I am not sold at all on Rivers and want some young talent to come in at QB and we need a brighter future.
