Jalen Ramsey played in nine game for the Rams in 2019.

When the LA Rams traded two first’s and a fourth for Jalen Ramsey, it was just another example of trading draft equity for established cornerbacks. The deal comes on the heels of trading for Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib prior to the 2018 season.
Make no mistake, Ramsey is a top-three cornerback and at 25, just entering his prime. Not only will Ramsey help market the team but makes for one heck of a defensive duo with All-Pro defensive tackle, Aaron Donald.
Having Ramsey on the roster is a good thing and there is no question that he is better than anyone the Rams would’ve taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. However, by trading two first-rounders and a fourth-round pick, GM Les Snead has shown once again that having proven NFL stars is better than gambling on draft picks.
Not only do the Rams have to extend Ramsey, but they need to think about possibly locking up Troy Hill who is a 2021 unrestricted free agent. Fellow CB, Darious Williams is a 2021 RFA meaning that the Rams could potentially lose all three if they don’t act.
Both Hill and Williams were undrafted free agents who performed exceptionally well in 2019. If the Rams don’t extend them now and they duplicate their 2019 performance, it will be very hard to retain them.
Second-year defensive back, David Long and rookie Terrell Burgess will battle it out at the slot and are under team control for the next few years. If they are able to step up, it should take some pressure off of Snead to find suitable replacements for Hill and Williams.
Not only did the LA Rams trade picks for Ramsey, but they will spend north of $20M per year with approximately $70M in guarantees. That’s a hefty price tag. Ramsey insists that his agent and the Rams are on the same page so it seems that it’s a matter of when – not if a deal gets done.
Regardless of Ramsey’s extension, if all CBs play up to their potential,, the Rams look to have one of the best secondaries in the NFL this year.
