Broncos legend John Elway has stepped down from the role of GM of the Denver Broncos.
According to Elway himself, he will remain with the organization in a newly elevated role and will remain the full-time president of football operations for the team.
Due to this, the Broncos will now begin the search for a new general manager. The new GM of the team is expected to have full control over all roster decisions including the draft, free agency, and roster cuts.
Furthermore, it has been reported that head coach Vic Fangio’s job is entirely safe as of now and he will contribute to the search for the new GM along with Elway.
John Elway’s top assistant and director of player personnel Matt Russell will also be stepping away from the team as he will be retiring. Russell was offered the opportunity to become the new GM of the team but decided that it was not the best decision for him and his family at this time and would like to begin a new chapter of his life. Matt Russell will also contribute to the new GM search.
This is a monumental change for the Broncos organization as John Elway has had full control over the transactions of the team for the past decade. He has been a huge part of each of the Broncos’ three Super Bowl championships, being the GM for the most recent win at Super Bowl 50.
Elway has also made some of the most impactful moves in Denver Broncos history as GM of the team by bringing in future Hall of Famers QB Peyton Manning and OLB Von Miller, both of which were huge contributors to the SB 50 victory.
Over the course of the past decade as GM, John Elway has accumulated multiple respectable accolades including a 90-59 win/loss record, 5 AFC West Championships, 2 AFC Championships (two super bowl appearances), and 1 aforementioned super bowl championship.
Although the first 5 years under Elway started off on a great foot, the most recent 5 weren’t as great having 4 straight losing seasons (a Broncos franchise record) and the team has missed the playoffs in 5 straight seasons.
