This past 2020 season for the New York Giants displayed flashes of being a great team in the future but it’s very clear of the upgrades that need to be made for this team to succeed in the future. The WR position is a clear position of need for Big Blue and needs to be addressed heavily. The Giants can’t afford to bring in another late round pick or sign an average receiver in free agency to elevate this offense. This team needs a blue chip prospect in the draft or spend some cash to get a true number 1 wideout.
This season we’ve seen the WR position crumble either from injuries, roster management, talent, and commitment. It didn’t help that Joe Judge and the offensive staff started the season with just 5 wideouts. They consisted of Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, C.J. Board, and Damien Ratley. Three of the five players are known for dealing with injuries and sustained injuries early in the year. That being Tate, Shepard and Slayton. C.J. also wound up hurt with a serious concussion/neck injury during the season.
This core also had an issue with creating separation. Daniel Jones had to constantly make tight window throws and and throws in coverage. This stalled the offense from scoring points and just moving down the field. Drops are a huge issue for this team as well. To keep it short, there just wasn’t enough talent on this WR depth chart. Damien Ratley found himself off the team for a couple of weeks the Giants only had 4 receivers on the team.
The Giants have plenty of avenues to take to try and address this position so let’s take a vague look at what they can do. First, they can try to see how free agency plays out. Depending on how the teams free agency period goes, they could clear up enough cap space to sign a top-tier WR like Allen Robinson or Kenny Golladay. If not, they absolutely have to go get a WR early in the first round of the draft. Jamarr Chase, Devonta Smith, or Jaylen Waddle needs to be a choice for Dave Gettleman in the draft. There are plenty of talented receivers in this draft but there is a significant drop off after those guys, so the Giants need to target them early in this draft.
