The Giants made 2 expected moves already.
Golden Tate of all players on the Giants’ roster was the most obvious potential casualty for Big Blue 2021. Tate signed a 4 year, $37.5 million dollar deal with $22.95 million in guaranteed money in 2019. From the jump it already looked like a bad move considering his age and potential lack of production matched with the annual average of just over $9 million. So making a move like this shows Dave Gettleman making up for his mistake and making the right move for the Giants in 2021.
David Mayo was another potential contract that had a chance of being dealt with. David Mayo re-signed with the Giants after being signed late into the 2019 season due to the injuries on the LB group. Mayo played well enough to be re-signed to a 2 year, $4.85 million dollar deal. But after suffering injuries of his own in 2020 it was the right move to release Mayo and save the $2.5 million this year.
The Giants are already starting off the 2021 season off right as seems to be on the same page as Giants fans which will make for less of an outraged season than we have seen last year. In total, the Giants will save a grand total of $8.5 million dollars in just one day. The roster management along with salary cap chess still have a lot more work to be done. But it now begs the question. What will the Giants do next?
All signs point to the G-men taking a receiver in the 1st round of this years draft, but how else will they address the wide receiver position? Also, how to do they play to address the linebacker position with a rotational player like Mayo now off the team?
