The Los Angeles Rams extended star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to a five-year $105 million deal making him the highest paid cornerback in NFL history. Details are still emerging, but we know Ramsey will receive $71.2 million guaranteed another cornerback record.
The Rams already gave up precious draft capital (two first-round picks) for Ramsey in a midseason acquisition from Jacksonville last year making it almost a given that he would resign. There was no way the Rams would trade two first-round picks just to let Ramsey walk after 1.5 years.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Ramsey will make $21million annually, $3.5 million more than the next highest paid cornerback, Bill’s Tre’Davious White who is the same age as Ramsey. Next on the list is Darius Slay at $16.6 million who is four years older than Ramsey.
Ramsey has been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL since he was drafted out of Florida State in 2016. According to Pro Football Focus, Ramsey has an overall 90.3 grade, ranking him sixth among all qualifying cornerbacks since 2016.
There are few lockdown outside cornerbacks in the NFL and Ramsey is one of them. He always matches up against the best receivers in the league and has allowed only 10 TDs in 60 career games. Add 10 career interceptions and Ramsey has proven to be a problem for opposing offenses.
The Rams now have a nice young core of Jared Goff, Aaron Donald and Ramsey all locked up through 2024. It’s a lot of guaranteed money for only three players but no other team in the NFL features the best player at two different defensive positions.
Ramsey joins a loaded Rams secondary and will face off against DeAndre Hopkins, Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel twice a year.
