We are all desperate at this point. I, myself am currently wondering if Dez Bryant is available. One of the most consistent issues I’ve seen week to week is close but is not the Quarterback position. Nor is it the offensive line, but the Wide Receivers.
Too many times, I’ve had to yell at my TV, “CATCH THE BALL!”, “HOW DID HE DROP THAT!” Too many times… It’s clear Joe Judge and his new regime have mismanaged this position but it’s not beyond repair and it shouldn’t take a process to fix. It just needs to be brought to the forefront as one of the key issues we are experiencing on this offense.
First off, The Giants came into this season with just 5 WRs. That being, Darius Slayton, Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard, C.J. Board and Damion Ratley. The Giants waived Corey Coleman before week 1 and it’s now the 7th wonder of the world of why we waived him and how he hasn’t been signed. That’s your 5. Slayton has injury concerns as he missed the 1st 2 games of his rookie year with hamstring injury which are very common for burners. Sterling Shepard has concussion injuries and recently hurt his toe, sending him to IR, and Golden Tate missed the 1st game of the season this year. That means there is so much inconsistency on our top 3 wideouts it leaves us with Ratley and Board.
The Giants have 4 WRs on the roster currently due to Shepard hitting the IR and the Giants wait until week 6 to do something about it. For the past 5 weeks, Jason Garrett has not been able to open up the playbook with advanced route combinations and patterns. The talent we have well… lack there of, hinders Garrett in being able to call those plays
Lets look at last week. We all were jumping out of out seats when Slayton caught that deep pass for a TD but we put right back in our chairs when we saw the reason why Slayton got so open. It was a great call and great design. Those type of plays are what bunch sets do best. But the execution was terrible. Damion Ratley was called for an offensive pass interference that was almost impossible to miss. Ratley cut right into a DB and didn’t make an effort to make it look like he was just running a route, and allowed Slayton to get wide open.
As I’ve said before the Giants finally addressed the position and that’s adding WR Austin Mack to the active roster and waiving Damion Ratley. Good riddance. But why do we still only have 4 WRs? Mack reminds me a lot of Victor Cruz in his frame a play style. He isn’t the fastest but can run a route and is specialist at catching in traffic.
Let’s see how this plays out but we need a ‘Help Wanted’ sign for the WRs ASAP!
