The Washington football team surprised the national media week 1 and beat the Eagles in a comeback victory. It was a different story on Sunday as they started down double digits again but could not pull out the victory. Haskins struggled but two turnovers in the first half did not help the team either.
Dwayne Haskins made his ninth start against the Arizona Cardinals. Haskins went 19 for 33 with 223 yards passing. He also had one touchdown and no interceptions. Dwayne did not show much improvement from last year in this game. He actually may have regressed against the Cardinals. Many fans we’re calling for Alex Smith or Kyle Allen to come in. There were passes he threw that we’re inaccurate and non catchable. His mechanics and footwork we’re off and he threw the ball with no touch. As a fan it was frustrating to watch but people have to understand that Dwayne is essentially still a first year quarterback with only nine starts under his belt.
The first two games the Washington Football team has been down by at least 17 points in the first half. Washington’s offense is not productive enough to start games down by double digits and win. The defense was huge in the first win but forcing turnovers is not going to happen every week. Offensive Coordinator Scott Turner has struggled as well with play calling and getting more weapons involved. Scott Turner has to call more plays to get Dwayne Haskins comfortable. Washington did shoot themselves in the foot with a fumble on a punt return and then another fumble in the red zone. The team has no margin for error to have a chance to win.
Dwayne Haskins has the talent and tools to be a franchise Quarterback. Scott Turner has to call some quick screens and quick slants to help Haskins become comfortable in the beginning of games. Last year former offensive Coordinator Kevin OcConnell had Dwayne Haskins playing well. Kevin OcConnell called plays that got the ball out of Dwayne’s hands quickly. Dwayne has played better in the second half when Scott Turner is calling quick throws. Dwayne definitely has to be better with footwork and give more touch for his receivers to catch the ball. Once Dwayne uses more touch he will improve. He still has to work on his footwork. Unfortunately, Ron Rivera will probably draft a quarterback in this years draft if Dwayne does not improve.
I am one of the few people that still believes Dwayne Haskins can be a franchise quarterback. It will be interesting to see if he can prove the doubters wrong.
