Sophomore sensation DK Metcalf has more receiving yards this year than any other NFL receiver, in just his second season in Seattle. This past Monday Night, Metcalf registered 177 yards receiving, on 10 catches, averaging 17.7 yards per reception, an incredibly difficult accomplishment. In the same game, DK became the first Seahawks receiver EVER to reach 1,000 yards receiving only 11 games into the season, putting him only 248 yards from Hall of Famer Steve Largent’s single season receiving record in Seattle, on pace to destroy it if remaining healthy this regular season. Metcalf now has more cumulative receiving yards against the Philadelphia Eagles (372), than Eagles receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside has in his entire career (214), drafted 7 spots before DK in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Metcalf’s early success has drawn comparisons to NFL Legends Calvin Johnson and Jerry Rice, which are completely heralded in this situation. In their first two years, Metcalf dominated Johnson in just about every statistical way. Believe it or not, Metcalf is also on pace to put up similar numbers to Jerry Rice’s first two years in the NFL… The difference is, Metcalf has size that Rice never had, making his potential boundless! How good can DK Metcalf really be?
DK Metcalf has the POTENTIAL to be the greatest WR of ALL TIME… What would it take? 18 more years of dominant pass catching, with a Lombardi or two in the mix, and 12+ pro bowl appearances. Obviously, as good as Metcalf is, this outcome is extremely unlikely, simply because Metcalf’s style of play is much more physical than receivers like Rice, which mean the toll on his body by the end of his career might be much worse, making him have a shorter career, similar to a Calvin Johnson, but hopefully longer.
What CAN we expect from DK Metcalf throughout his career (if he remains healthy)? We can expect Metcalf to become a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, 10x Pro Bowler, the BEST WR in the NFL for 2-4 years, and one of the top 10 best Wide Receivers of ALL TIME! What does he still need to fix to accomplish these things? Metcalf has mental lapses at times, that lead to dropped balls, missed blocking assignments, and stalled drives. If DK can get the mental side of his game in order, his physical is unmatched, and he has the potential to be the best. If nothing else, one thing is for sure: Seahawks fans have a LOT to be excited about!
