As a Titan fan myself, It brings those good feelings back to see Jim Schwartz in Nashville again. The Tennessee Titans have brought back one of the Organizations most beloved coaches in Jim Schwartz. He was the Defensive Coordinator for the Titans from 1999 to 2008. During that time, he had some of the best defenses in the history of the team. They earned six playoff berths, played in two AFC Championship Games and appeared in Super Bowl XXXIV while Schwartz was at the helm of the Defense. I think it’s safe to say that Tennessee fans are excited he is back. The real question on everybody’s mind is: What will he actually be doing and how involved will he be? Let’s break it down.
Jim Schwartz was the Defensive Coordinator for the last 5 seasons in Philadelphia. In those five seasons, he had three top 10 defenses. In 2017, his Eagle’s defense ranked 4th overall and won a Superbowl. He has become one of the greatest defensive minds in the game over the last 20 years and is highly respected across the league by players and coaches alike. There has been a lot of reaction from fans across social media. Many people are saying that he will not have a “Big Role” on the team but I disagree. I think Jim Schwartz was brought back for an obvious reason. The Titans desperately need help on defense and Shane Bowen needs a mentor to guide him along the way.
In an article earlier this year, Schwartz said this: “Although my passion for the game remains strong, it is best for me to step back from the day-to-day of coaching for the time being. I have too much respect for the game and for everybody involved to compromise the level of commitment that I believe is necessary to do the job”. His plan was to take a year off but when Mike Vrabel realized he was available, I think he and Jon Robinson jumped at the opportunity. Mike Vrabel said: “He will provide our defensive staff with experience and perspective in the staff meetings and on the practice field.” This to me, sounds like more than just a “Defensive Assistant” title, I think Schwartz will be heavily involved in getting this defense back to where the Titans defense should be.
The Tennessee Titans set franchise records last year all across the board. It was a whirlwind of a season. The offense was the best in team history and the defense put up some of the worst numbers in team history. They have overhauled the defense and brought in guys who they feel like can turn it around and love to play football. I personally think that bringing in Jim Schwartz could be one of the best moves of the offseason. His experience is hard to deny and with a coach of his pedigree, you don’t bring him in to just be an “Assistant”. The Tennessee Titans brought him in for a bigger reason. They brought him in to help make a considerable difference. We shall soon find out what that “difference” will be.

Great article. The one question I ask is this a Mike Vrabel hire or a management Volun-told Mike he needed to hire. His track record for being being DC is not good and his hard headedness is worse. Please let Schwartz do his thing.
Thank you so much Darrell! Thanks for reading.
